About the project...

This project was initiated at short notice in response to a Tesco recruitment campaign at the distribution centre in Balborough where approximately 400 jobs were created during January – March 2010 in assembly, packing and other non-food activity.

The project provided Pre-employment Gateway training courses which gave local unemployed people the opportunity to access a short (one week) pre-interview training course.  Suitability of the clients for these vacancies was ensured by an Open Day assessment process.  Clients who passed the Open Day assessment entered the training course and were guaranteed a job interview with Tesco following completion. Clients who do not pass the open day assessment were referred to Phoenix Training or other sources of information, advice and guidance.

2009/10 Year End

A total of 221 Bolsover residents were referred to the Gateway open days, of which a total of 61 were selected to go on the pre-employment gateway training.  Bolsover residents represented 32% of the total number of participants (189).  Remaining participants came from Chesterfield (51%), Clay Cross/North East (6%), Worksop/Bassetlaw (4%) and Derby/Alfreton/Heanor/Long Eaton (6%).  A total of 138 participants completed the Gateway training and were forwarded for interview by Tesco.

The latest interview data received by Jobcentre Plus from Tesco show that a total of 65 Bolsover residents have to date secured employment with Tesco.  It is unclear at this stage what proportion of those 65 were gateway clients.  Jobcentre Plus are also working to identify how many of the 65 were previously unemployed.

2009/10 Quarter 3

A total of 221 Bolsover residents were referred to the Gateway open days, of which a total of 61 were selected to go on the pre-employment gateway training.  Bolsover residents represented 32% of the total number of participants.  Remaining participants came from Chesterfield (51%), Clay Cross/North East (6%), Worksop/Bassetlaw (4%) and Derby/Alfreton/Heanor/Long Eaton (6%).  All participants attending the Gateway training will be guaranteed an interview with Tesco.

All those that were not selected to attend the three day pre-employment training were referred to information, advice and guidance services.

Further detail on the number of participants gaining employment at Tesco is still awaited and this is proving problematic to obtain at this stage.
