About the project...

This project aimed to support new and future enterprise in the district by enabling two key elements of the LEO programme to continue in the area.

Enterprise Coaching
Two Enterprise Coaches operated within Shirebrook and South Normanton and worked with individuals across the south of the District, providing one-to-one support and guidance to cultivate interest in enterprise. The focus was on supporting each client in breaking through personal barriers (e.g. poor levels of confidence, esteem and self-efficacy) to help launch their business idea and to realise their potential.

Enterprise Academy
Enterprise Academy activities were delivered within five secondary schools across the District, and focused on improving the scope and delivery of enterprise as well as improving the treatment of enterprise skills across the entire school curriculum.  Specialist advisors provided targeted and focused mentoring with schools to further embed enterprise capability development within the curriculum and facilitate the ‘Enterprise Challenge’ programme which supported a competitive learning environment in which new business ventures were formed and progressed by students over the year. The programme culminated in; a trade fair final during National Enterprise Week in November; best practice events for teachers and enterprise coordinators; an on-line web-based resource for schools to enable information and best practice sharing; and the formation of new Enterprise Clubs – working with Enterprise Coaches and business mentors providing an arena in which students can further develop new enterprise skills.

Supporting Enterprise - Case Studies

Case Study 1

Self-employed for around 7 months now, J has found LEO Enterprise Coach, Paul Hastings invaluable in providing the practical help he needed whilst setting up his Shirebrook business.

J was introduced to Paul at the point he was first looking for retail premises, he now puts his speedy arrival in his own premises firmly down to the help and support received from LEO.

“I’m completely new to business, so Paul’s help has been fantastic. He’s helped me understand and deal with things like trading standards, fire regulations and employing someone to help out - he’s really taken away a lot of the stress involved in starting up a business.”

“Me being me, I’d have got there eventually - but Paul has helped no end - he’s been brilliant, he’s not like the other business advisors I’ve come across, he’s really down to earth and friendly so we get on well”’

Outcome:
“Business is going exceedingly well,” said J. “I’ve got myself a shop already and will soon be running a gaming room in the back too.

2011/12 Year End

Enterprise Academy – Stage five of the Enterprise Challenge Event Programme, the Enterprise Oscars, took place on 25 January 2012.  The Enterprise Oscars was designed to celebrate the success of all the teams involved in the Enterprise Challenge Event programme and awards were presented to all 10 teams for being winners in their schools.  A legacy report for the Enterprise Academy has been produced and is available on the LSP website.  Legacy and sustainability discussions have also taken place with all schools between Jan – March 2012.

Enterprise Coaching – Enterprise coaches continued to deliver up to the end of March 2012, assisting a total of 26 new business start ups.  The project has reported that increasing demands for support have started to materialise and that much of this demand will remain unfulfilled until business support services are put in place by NBV who have secured ERDF funding to deliver business start-up activity. Pre-start work will also hopefully be undertaken by DNCC, subject to them securing ERDF also.

Working Neighbourhoods Fund for this project ceased in March 2012.

2011/12 Quarter 3

Enterprise Academy
The Enterprise Oscars will take place over the coming quarter to celebrate the success of the teams involved in the Enterprise Challenge Event.

Enterprise Coaching
Progress has been made with a Business Forum achieved. Current demand however from existing businesses reflects the difficult trading conditions for small businesses. An unexpected decrease in demand for support with creating new businesses, job creation and pre-business start enquiries was seen this quarter with a reduction in referrals from partner organisations as a result of funding cuts.
